A Psalm for Today...

This Psalm has been on my mind a lot lately and has been particularly encouraging in very personal ways, so I thought I would share it with you today, as well as the footnotes listed in my Bible.

A Psalm of David, when he was in the wilderness of Judah.

Psalm 63

O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you;
my soul thirsts for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.

{The book of Psalms permits no false spiritualization.  The whole person yearns for God, not merely a non-physical aspect of the person.}

So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory.  Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you.

{The psalmist remembers the place of God's appointment, and the vision of God's "power" and "glory" entrusted to him there.  Steadfast love = that is, the unchanging love God shows toward those joined to Him by His covenant.}

So I will bless you as long as I live; in your name I will lift up my hands.

My soul will be satisfied as with fat and rich food, and my mouth will praise you with joyful lips, when I remember you upon my bed, and meditate on you in the watches of the night; for you have been my help; and in the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy.

{Only in praise to God, in intimate communion with Him, will the psalmist feel spiritually content.  The psalmist has confidence in the Lord when he is most vulnerable to fear and attack (watches of the night).  God may be compared to a mother bird who protects her young...}

My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me.

{Though far removed from the sanctuary, the place where he has experienced God's presence, the psalmist still enjoys intimate communion with Him.  Clinging to the Lord means finding in Him one's only hope.}

But those who seek to destroy my life shall go down into the depths of the earth; they shall be given over to the power of the sword; they shall be a portion for jackals.  But the king shall rejoice in God; all who swear by him shall exult, for the mouths of liars will be stopped.

{This verse is the first indication of distress or danger in the poem of the psalmists's distress...God's justice wins out.  Those who love God will continue to praise Him, while the wicked will be stifled.}

Eat, Drink, and Feel Guilty...

Food.  You know I have a thing for it.  I mean, just check out my last post...  I've always appreciated good food...I come from a family of good Southern cooks and food is so much a part of our lives...not only by necessity, but as a part of our celebrating and fellowshipping.  Food is a gift that God has graciously given us to fulfill the needs that our physical bodies have.

But, like all good gifts, because of our sin it can become a temptation...an idol...an addiction.  I've struggled with maintaining a healthy weight for the majority of my adult life and even more so after being pregnant.  Being a stay at home mom has been a hard road in that the kitchen is always at my disposal with no one there to monitor me, except myself.  Self-control is often lacking, and in recent years I have learned that I turn to food a lot of times when I am not even remotely hungry...and not celery sticks and cucumbers, mind you.  This is not in an eating-disorder kind of a way, but in a there's-a-void-in-my-life-that-I'm-trying-to-fill-with-food kind of a way.  Several different books have been really helpful in helping me identify the times when I am reaching for food and shouldn't be and also the deeper spiritual/emotional need that is present.  Two that come to mind are Reshaping It All and Made to Crave.

It is an ongoing battle and one that I'm not sure I will ever gain control over...my "thorn in the flesh"?  But, I am thankful that I am not alone in this battle and that others are facing the same temptations.  Today's reading from The 30-Day Praise Challenge was convicting and encouraging to me.  Reading truths such as these...

My child, I am the only One who can meet your needs completely.  I am the Bread of Life and living water.  Yet you often run to other things to satisfy the cravings of your soul.  Those other things can become addictions.  Instead of trying to anesthetize the ache in your soul, come and praise Me.

I created you with an ache that only I can fill.

Taste and see that I am good.  I fill the hungry and satisfy the thirsty with good things.  Exalt Me!  I give you food to nourish and sustain your body and other gifts to delight your soul.  But I never mean for you to become obsessed with My gifts.

I want to be your obsession.

All you are longing for is found in Me.  As you praise Me, the cycle of addiction is broken.  Delight yourself in Me, and you will find that I can satisfy your cravings.  Those who set their appetite on Me will be blessed.

I am thankful that God provides spiritual food to help us as we struggle with physical food...

These verses stood out to me today as I looked them up and I wanted to share them with you in case any of you have similar struggles...

source

I would encourage you to look up these verses and read the context and any footnotes that your Bible may have about them.  That was a helpful exercise as well.

A quick search on pinterest for a Scripture reference will return a lot of images and these are easily printable and can be put in a cheap frame and placed around your home.  Filling your home with Scripture is a great way to fill your mind with it, because as you walk through your home, you see it and read it.

The footnote in my Bible for the verse listed above says...

"Only in praise to God, in intimate communion with Him, will the Psalmist be spiritually content."

How true for us too.

I hope this encourages you today.  Food is a gift...one that God gave us to enjoy.

Lord Jesus, I praise You for being the Bread of Life and the living water.  Thank You for quenching my thirst and satiating my hunger.  Thank You for being more than able to heal my addictions.  I praise You that the ache You placed within my heart can only be filled by You.  Thank You, Holy Spirit, for enabling me to be disciplined and balanced so that I can enjoy the Father's gifts without becoming obsessed with them.  I know there are times when I run to {food} for comfort, because I am lonely or bored.  I praise You, Holy One, that You are healing my addictions with Your love.  Thank You that Your love can bring comfort and fill the deepest longings of my heart.  I will sing of Your love forever!

November Reading...

I'm always interested in what other people are reading, so I thought I'd share what I'm working through (hopefully) for the month.  I do a lot less reading in the summer, because we are outside so much more, but as we ease into the cooler months, I'm finding myself drawn to my books so much more.

I've enjoy Courtney Joseph's blog for several years now and from it have discovered many other bloggers and authors that I find encouraging.  During the long days at home by myself with an infant, Courtney and others became a network for me that encouraged and challenged me.  I was excited to read that she was writing a book, and couldn't wait to put it on my Christmas list, so I've been enjoying working through this book.
click here for more info
Courtney has written a study guide of questions to go along with the readings, and that is available HERE.  Mandy over at Biblical Homemaking (another of my favorite blogs) is doing a weekly study through the book also and she has developed a study guide as well.  You can find links to those posts HERE.  I have found that it is so much more profitable to read a book with a study guide to help you digest what you are reading.

Lauren over at Only From Scratch suggested reading this book for the month of November, and I was going to wait on this one too, but something prompted me to go ahead and purchase the e-book and try to keep up, and I am SO glad that I did.  The first four days have already proved to be exactly what I need to be hearing right this minute.

The book is divided up into a devotional type reading for each day with an invitation (from God) taken directly from Scripture, a suggestion for praise songs to listen to for each day (I'm creating a Spotify playlist with all of them), a prayer for the day, and some questions to ponder/journal.  2-3 pages max, so easily do-able at some point in the day.  To whet your appetite for it, here are a few of the quotes that have stood out to me in the last couple of days...  They are random and not necessarily in order...

God invites us to praise Him, not just because praise gives God His due, but also because of what it does in us and for us.  Praise restores our faith, fills us with joy, calms our fears, and inspires us to love and obey God.

When you hear God speak to you in prayer, don't second-guess or question whether you imagined His voice.  Instead, trust by faith that you did hear His voice and then respond in obedience and faith.

Today, worship and praise Me for My wisdom.  Every time you face a perplexing decision, praise Me that I can show you what to do.

Every time you feel an uncertain angst in your soul, praise God immediately that He will give you discernment for that moment.

When you are weak and you praise Me, you give Me the opportunity to showcase My power.  So don't be discouraged by your weaknesses; instead, praise Me that I promise to sustain and help you.

Those who put their hope in You will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not faint.  Thank You that when I feel weak, I can move out of the way and trust Your strength.  I praise You this day that You will provide the strength I need to be who You have called me to be.

I've been a part of a mom's group/book study for several years now, though my attendance has been lacking in recent months due to scheduling conflicts.  This group has been a huge encouragement to me and a challenge to me in my Christian walk.  They are currently studying this book and I am reading along so that I will be caught up when I do finally get to attend a meeting.  I have studied this book once before, and will openly admit that I didn't love it, but I'm giving it a second chance, trusting that God will use it.

My daughter has some dental issues that we are currently studying and researching.  Research tends to open cans of worms that you wish you could just stuff back in and seal up and pretend you never even broke the seal.  I'm overwhelmed by the information, but trying to learn how we might best treat her issues in the most natural way possible.  I'm about halfway through this book and I need to get busy finishing it before I have to return it to the library.

Finally, I'm looking forward to the Good Morning Girls Thanksgiving study starting on November 11.  I've been participating in the GMG studies for a few years now and I'm so thankful for that ministry and the gift that it has been to me and so many others.

I've also been enjoying flipping through some holiday magazines, cook books, and crafting books...but there are way too many of them to list here.

What are you reading, these days?

the unseen...

This is definitely going to be an unusual post for me.  But I have been so shaken by it that I feel like I must talk about it.

First of all, sugar before bed is a bad idea for me.  I know this.  But, I was rebellious last night.  Sigh.  Self-control is taught once again.  Sugar before bed = vivid, dramatic dreams for me.

So, I had this dream and in my dream I thought my daughter was crying and then I was sort of waking up and then I couldn't tell whether she WAS crying for real or not, so I got up to check on her.  My heart was pounding because it was kind of a screaming cry like something was wrong.  She was sleeping very peacefully, so I concluded that the crying was only in my dream.  (My husband confirmed this morning that he did NOT hear her and he usually hears those sorts of cries.)

I went back to bed and attempted to fall asleep, but the adrenaline was flowing by that point.  It was shortly before 5:00 a.m.  I started thinking about the quiet house and the reading I need to do for a book study with a friend, the new Bible study starting today, and the podcasts I need to listen to for tonight's discussion group, and I was weighing whether to go ahead and get up and take advantage of the quiet, or try to sleep a little longer.  I snuggled closer to my husband and apparently drifted back to sleep for another vivid dream.

In my dream, I had decided to go ahead and get up to read.  As I walked down the hall, I realized that the lights we usually leave on at night were not on.  The house was completely dark.  I also notice the motion light was on outside and I could just barely make out an unfamiliar vehicle in the driveway.  As I turned the corner from the living room to go through the dining room to the kitchen, I was suddenly grabbed by very strong arms and was being pushed back down the hall.  At first I thought it was G, but then realized the grip was too tight and too forceful and I tried to scream but no sound would come out.  At that point I willed myself to wake up and I did, heart pounding (again)...but when I woke up, I was being pressed into the bed so hard that I physically tried to push whatever was on top of me off (thinking it was my husband???).  There was nothing there but I was finally able to sit up.  At this point I was very confused, because the force I felt was very real and I was very awake at that point but there was nothing/no one in the room and G was sleeping soundly BESIDE me.

I laid back down and tried to make sense of it.  What came to mind was a story that I heard a little over a year ago.  I help to give rides to folks in our community who want to come to church but don't have transportation.  For awhile, there was a group of 3 (a married couple, and a single man) that rode together.  This particular Sunday though, it was just the single man that C and I picked up.  He was a dear, sweet, older fellow and ended up being our church custodian for awhile.  He has since passed away.  He climbed into the car rather stiffly and I asked him how he was doing.  He replied (in his casual, Southern way), "OH, I'm hurtin' this mornin'.  That ol' devil knew I was plannin' to go to church this mornin' and he jumped on my back ALL NIGHT LONG.  I was tempted to stay home this mornin' but I told that ol' devil to get offa me, I was goin' to CHURCH!"  This not being language I was familiar with seemed funny at first, but the more I thought about it, I realized that the devil was more real to him than he was to me.  He wasn't kidding and he wasn't being dramatic or exaggerating.  He was serious.  I was convicted by my temptation to "brush off" what he said and I was convicted by my lack of belief that spiritual warfare is real and happening everyday.

I've never forgotten that story and I'll never forget that man and his witness to me that day (though probably unintentional for him).  This morning as I lay in bed contemplating what I had felt upon me, I couldn't help but wonder if the devil in some form was physically pressing me into bed to keep me from getting up to study God's word as all of the things I was thinking of doing would be spiritual study.  Even as I think about it, my being wants to scream that those sorts of things don't happen, but quite frankly, I can't say whether they do or don't.  I know what I felt this morning was real, I know that I will NOT be having sugar before bed again for a very long time (possibly ever!), and I know that I will set my alarm and GET UP in the morning to study, because if this is a battle, I'm going to fight with all the strength the Lord gives to me.

May 16th, 17th, and 18th: Randomosity...

Forgive me, folks.  I just haven't taken the time to post these last few days.  I attribute this to lack of desire to spend too much time at my computer, warm temperatures making it really FEEL like summer so I gravitate towards summer activities (usually involving water!), the realization that my little girl is growing quickly and I'll have plenty of time to blog when she's grown and gone, very few "must-do's" this week allowing me to spend more time doing fun things with said little girl, and then I had to go and read these articles:

So...my already in place commitment to staying off the computer during her awake hours became an even more firm commitment...and I started caring less about my phone.  I mean, we did survive before cell phones and texting after all.  I'm just kind of over it all.  Not to say that I don't appreciate technology...I am posting this on my BLOG afterall, but our need to be "plugged in" all the time has just became exhausting for me and it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth and a sick feeling in my stomach.  So...if you e-mail, facebook, text, or call me and I don't respond right away...don't worry...I'm probably just playing with my daughter while I can! :-)

So, for the sake of the grandmothers, I will give you a glimpse of our week...

*Monday - at home all day, laundry, recovering from the weekend, gearing up for the week

*Tuesday - met friends at the aquarium (hundreds of school kids there AGAIN!), stayed to play in the fountains outside for about an hour afterwards and shared our popcorn with the birds. C helped me make a new mexican dish for dinner and we made some fresh salsa that was quite tasty! worked in the garden in the evening...pulling weeds after all that rain.  C was happy to break out her new gloves and spray bottle.  G had session meeting in evening, so C went to bed early and I enjoyed reading in bed for a few hours before I crashed.

*Wednesday - woke up feeling HORRIBLE (thank you allergies!) and finally resigned myself to take some meds and then felt much better (apart from being a little lightheaded).  Made it to the last meeting of Bible Study and a brunch with those ladies - love them!  Home in time to get some lunch for C, visit with G while he ate, and then a guy showed up to do some work at our house.  C helped me finish making a new dish for dinner (EPIPHONY!  Cooking as much of our dinner as possible earlier in the day allows me to cook at a cooler time of day, and allows me plenty of time to have C help me without feeling pushed to get it ready.  And we ALL know that kiddos get a little cranky the later the day gets...WHY haven't I thought about this before?!?), and then she went down for her nap.  Worked on some church stuff on the computer, checked e-mail/blogs, etc.  Played with her after nap while guy finished up his work, played outside for a bit, dinner, and spent some time enjoying the cool evening outside.

*Thursday - Running errands and researching a new cell phone/provider (ironic, I know), lunch with G at CFA, more errands...discovered we have a SWEET FROG's now...stopped for frozen yogurt, OF COURSE.  (I'm kind of a frozen yogurt junkie...sort of.  TCBY was my fave!)  On the way home, made a last minute decision to swim at a friend's pool for a bit, leftovers for dinner.

*Friday - Cleaning, Mowing, Gardening.  C's napping, I'm wrapping up some computer stuff, need to exercise.  Dinner with friends tonight and more swimming.  The weekend is full and I'll try to snap some photos to share next week to journal our events.

Here's a few pics I've collected this week - used my phone more than the camera, pardon the poor quality.

Perseverance

"Lord, teach my children perseverance in all they do,
and help them especially to run with perseverance the race
marked out for them."

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses,
let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely,
and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us..."

May 15th: Salsa for Breakfast...

This is a strange post - you have been warned.  I ate salsa for breakfast...corn salsa...a pinterest find.  You can see the original recipe here, and my changes are as follows: no scallion/cilantro - substituted fresh chives, basil, and parsley, added a can of black beans, and used regular chili powder instead of chipotle.  It is so-amazing-I-can't-stop-going-back-to-the-fridge-for-more-eat-it-with-a-spoon-good.

I can't wait to try it with some greens for a refreshing lunch salad.  1 cup has about 150 calories, so it's not too bad -- it's the chips that get ya!

But still -- salsa for breakfast.  NO...not pregnant.  (Just in case any of you went there.)

I just finished up a 7-day cleanse "diet" with yesterday being my last full day -- so this morning, I had NO limitations as to what I could/could not eat, and the salsa had been sitting in the fridge since I made it yesterday afternoon...all the flavors blending together.  YUM.

So this cleanse -- it's supposed to flush your body of impurities, and over the week, you should lose somewhere between 5-11 pounds.  (**Losing that much in a week IS.NOT.HEALTHY...on a regular basis...just clarifying.)  I was intrigued and decided to try it.  I think I was being driven by hitting the first plateau on this weight loss journey and being frustrated with "doing all the right things" but not seeing too many results.  (Turns out I had some numbers wrong, but anyway...)

So here's the plan:

Day 1: Eat only fruit, but NO bananas.
Day 2: Eat only veggies, but NO peas, corn, beans.  For supper a baked potato with butter!
Day 3: Eat only fruit and veggies...no potato today.
Day 4: Eat only bananas and skim milk (or yogurt made with skim milk).  Up to 8 of each.
Day 5: Eat only chicken or turkey and 6 tomatoes.
Day 6: Eat only chicken, turkey, and veggies...no potato.
Day 7: Eat only Miracle Soup.  (onion, cabbage, green pepper, celery, tomatoes, onion soup mix, water)

Yeah....so I learned a LOT of self-control this week...and throughout the process ended up losing just over 7 pounds...which was a really nice added bonus!  This is not a very balanced diet obviously, so it would not be a good idea to eat this way regularly to try to lose weight.  Plus...you might go crazy.  I was SO ready for the week to be OVER!  I can't really tell any difference in my body as far as the cleansing aspect, but the weight loss was nice and hopefully jump started things again so that I will continue losing and not gain it all back.  I searched around a little bit and discovered there are several variations on this, so if I end up doing it again sometime, I will read up on those before I start.

SO -- maybe NOW you understand WHY I ate Corn Salsa for Breakfast. :-)

Generosity

"Grant that my children may be generous and willing to share,
and so lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age."

"They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share,
thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that
they may take hold of that which is truly life."
1 Timothy 6:18-19

May 14th: My girl...

Words cannot even begin to express how much I love this little girl...

It was a delight to spend a relaxing weekend at home with my family.
Yesterday was a lovely, rainy day, and this little girl's daddy spoiled me.

Can't decide which one I like better...
she looks better in one and I look better in the other -- oh well...

Kindness

"Lord, may my children always try to be kind to each other
and to everyone else."

"See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always
seek to do good to one another and to everyone."

May 12th: Relaxing on Saturday

LOVE it when he brings home flowers!

(Scrambled eggs)

It's been a great day relaxing at home with my loves...and since the house is quiet and the breeze is blowing through the open windows, I'm going back to spend a little time perusing these...

Courage

"May my children always be strong and courageous
in their character and in their actions."

"Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for
it is the Lord your God who goes with you.  He will not leave you or forsake you."

May 11th: We love this town...

We love the area where we live and we love being really close to a fun city with lots of things to do!  Yesterday, we enjoyed a trip to our local aquarium...along with several hundred children in school groups.  And, no, that is NOT an exaggeration -- I kind of cried a little inside when I realized they were all starting their tour when we were, not leaving.  Which, surprised me a little bit seeing as it was 2:00 in the afternoon. (Typically, things are very quiet at the aquarium at that time of the afternoon, which is why we choose to go then...)  But, we made do and thankfully we didn't lose each other in the masses.  I think we were both glad to get outside afterwards and have some personal space around us...claustrophobic tendencies?  OH NO, not me! Hahahahaha!

This little girl...is not afraid of snakes.

Quite possibly her most favorite part of the aquarium...the "up-up-up's"

Her 2nd favorite thing...touch tanks.

Faithfulness

"Let love and faithfulness never leave my children, but bind these
twin virtues around their necks and write them on the tablet of their hearts."

"Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you;
bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart."

But she likes ice cream better...

Betcha can't guess where we went...

A gorgeous afternoon following a rainy morning...

Flowers on our pepper plants!

Blooms on our squash plants!

Roma Tomatoes on the vine!

Self-Esteem

"Help my children develop a strong self-esteem that is rooted in the
realization that they are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus."

May 7th: Better late than never?

The hour is nearing midnight, and my bed is calling my name...but 3 days of slacking is enough, so I WILL get this posted while it is still the 7th.  We have a fun week shaping up so hopefully that means lots of pictures.  The reason for my lack of posting is this:

photo NOT taken by me...obviously...

We truly had a delightful weekend of being together and celebrating a graduation.  I am thankful for the opportunity and the memories.  And, as some of you may recall, I enjoy doing laundry, so I spent most of my day today basking in God's goodness to me...

Justice

"God, help my children to love justice as you do
and act justly in all they do."

"For the Lord is righteous; he loves righteous deeds;
the upright shall behold his face."
Psalm 11:7

"He has told you, O man, what is good;
and what does the Lord require of you
but to do justice, to love kindness,
and to walk humbly with your God?"

May 1st...

As I said in yesterday's post, I plan to post a photo-a-day-for-the-month-of-May, as well as one Biblical Virtue each day day to pray for our children.  If you'd like to join me, feel free to include a link to your post in a comment below.  I am going to be lazy and not take the time to add a link-up tool for every post this month, but feel free to join in.

Salvation

"Lord, let salvation spring up within my children,
that they may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory."

"Shower, O heavens, from above,
and let the clouds rain down righteousness;
let the earth open, that salvation and righteousness may bear fruit;
let the earth cause them both to sprout;
I the Lord have created it."
Isaiah 45:8

"Therefore, I endure everything for the sake of the elect,
that they also may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory."

How Deep the Father's Love for Us...

I'm working my way through the book, Give Them Grace, and it's a slow process, as I have to take some time to digest just about every chapter.  The one I read this morning was no exception.  I will refrain from just copying the entire chapter here -- if you want to read the whole thing, buy the book.  But, maybe this will make you decide you do in fact WANT to read it. :-)  Just what struck me...and I realize it may have no effect upon another the way that it did me.

The knowledge of God's Father-love is the first and simplest, but also the last and highest lesson in the school of prayer.
- Andrew Murray

...we know that "God is love," but at heart we're not really sure that our prayer amounts to anything more than lifeless protocol demanded by a disappointed father who sniffs at us, disapproves, and exacts some sort of obeisance before he opens up the bank vault to pinch out a little trinket from his treasures.  Run into his presence?  Raid the fridge?  Do our laundry? Ask for candy?  From God?  Hardly.  How could we possibly think about him in that way?  After all...He's the holy God, Lord of heaven and earth, who understands every thought and intention in our hearts.  "And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account."  Have an open and loving conversation with him?  How?

Every Christian knows that we have been commanded to pray, but our prayer life is frequently cold and lifeless.  It tends to be just another chore on our daily checklist.  Most of us don't have the same enthusiasm about it that we have if we are going for a visit to a beloved friend's house whose generosity always dazzles us.  We tend to be lazy about it because we're not thrilled about spending time with God.  Could it be that our aversion to prayer is because we are trying to motivate ourselves to pray through guilt?  Guilt will never eventuate in sincere prayer.  Guilt never motivates us to do anything wildly loving.

This is the one chief thought on which Jesus dwells.  He would have us see that the secret of effectual prayer is to have the heart filled with the father love of God.  It is not enough for us to know that God is a father; he would have us come under the full impression of what that name implies.  We must take the best earthly father we know; we must think of the tenderness and love with which he regards the request of his child, the love and joy with which he grants every reasonable desire.  We must then, as we think in adoring worship of the infinite love and fatherliness of God, consider how with much more tenderness and joy he sees us come to him and gives us what we ask aright.  And then, when we see how much this divine arithmetic is beyond our comprehension and feel how impossible it is for us to apprehend God's readiness to hear us, he would have us come and open our heart for the Holy Spirit to shed abroad God's father love there. - Andrew Murray

What you need as a praying parent is a deep drink of the great love of God, your Father,
not more commands to pray.

The Lord isn't disappointed in you or in your parenting.  He's not disappointed in your prayers.  He doesn't treat his dear children as "disappointments" whose obedience and failures take him by surprise or shock him.  He does not suspend his love until they get their acts back together.  He already knows the worst about you (in yourself) and loves and approves you nonetheless (in Christ).  Although your sin does grieve him, he doesn't want you to keep your distance, sitting in a corner wearing a dunce cap until you learn your lessons.  He invites you to come boldly in with joy and confidence, knowing that he is eager to embrace you.  You, as a sinner who trusts his Son, Jesus, are able to do that because the Son prays and intercedes for you.
Because of Jesus, your Father delights
to hear the sound of your voice.

When we soak our soul in the grace of the gospel, we'll find out desire to spend time with him in prayer changing.

Another reason we don't pray is that we are not really desperate.  The Lord is kind to make us desperate for him, but when we feel desperate we frequently don't pray.  Instead we get out our books and try to figure out what we're doing wrong rather than falling on our knees and pleading with our Father for grace.  We double-down our efforts to get the kids to do our bidding, and we feel as though we don't have time for prayer.

The remembrance of Christ's intercession, our Father's love for us, and our desperation are the fuel that we need to build the fire of fervent prayer in our hearts.  Guilt won't do it.  What we need is grace.  And we need his grace in our parenting too.  We need grace to see him everywhere, grace to lavish on our children.

All Christian parents are missionaries.  We are all on a mission from the Lord to announce the love of the Father to our children and to encourage them, as much as we can, to believe it.  We're to tell them of the law so that they know that they need rescue, and then we're to tell them of the Rescuer who has freed them from the law's curse.  But this monumental task is utterly impossible for us to accomplish on our own.

We don't need to try to pray to prove that we're properly pious or really serious.  Instead we pray because we are completely assured that the Father hears our prayers because they come to him through the lips of his dear Son.   Are your prayers weak, scrambled, inconsistent, self-centered?  Of course they are.  If we think they are anything else, we are very close to sliding into the self-righteous prayer that Jesus warned against in Luke 18.  Even so, we can take heart because the true cries of our heart are always voiced by the beloved Son, our great High Priest.

So, lean into him.  Don't be afraid that you'll fail at this.  Don't think he'll judge you because you don't say the right words with the right inflection and all the proper theology.  Don't think that he'll sniff at your requests because your family is such a mess.  Be assured that these things will never happen, for one simple reason: the record of our prayer has already been written.

The Father hears the perfectly worded, properly believing, and flawlessly theologically correct prayers of his beloved Son when you pray.

We can freely pour out our heart to our Father knowing that our dear Savior will purify and transform our words into petitions that please him.  When your prayer is freely spoken, joyful, and honest, your children will learn to pray that way too.  Teach them that he is the high King of heaven, yes, a person not to be trifled with.  But also teach them that he is their dear Father, one who delights to hear their requests, even when they say them all wrong and don't have much faith and mumble them as a last resort.  Go tell your Father about everything that's in your heart, and don't be afraid.  The Lord Jesus is mediating for us all.
